As Germany’s official cultural arm abroad, the Goethe-Institut promotes the German language and fosters international cultural exchange through film, art, performance, and education. Its new San Francisco home builds on a legacy that began in 1967, reestablishing the Institut as a dynamic “third place” for locals and visitors alike. The space hosts a broad range of programs—language classes, lectures, screenings, exhibitions, and live performances—requiring a design that is equally diverse, flexible, and welcoming for all ages.

Materiality & Architectural Dialogue

Minimalist bones meet playful precision. Natural wood wraps into benches and bookshelves. Recycled panels echo the Goethe logo while softening sound. Bold colors punctuate quiet corners. Every element honors the building’s past while making space for new stories to unfold.

Design Strategy & Concept

A former gallery becomes a vessel for culture, shaped by light and the rhythm of daily life. Arched windows and brickwork set the tone; a sculpted ceiling bends toward the street, drawing light deep within. Inside, the layout breathes—walls retract, rooms shift, and quiet nooks appear—allowing the space to adapt as easily as the programs it holds.
